Autocomplete for Drop-Down?

I just figured out how to create a drop down (data validation) within my
spreadsheet, but it seems a little cumbersome going back and forth between
the keyboard and mouse for fast data entry. I thought if I typed the first
few characters of an item within my list, it would autocomplete, but it
doesn't. Is there a way to do this?
My data validation list contains ####/Name. I'd like to be able to enter
partial number, and autocomplete the rest.

There is a sample file which shows how to do this, but be aware you are not
really using data validation, your faking it.
