Autocomplete Addresses in Outlook

M

Magnusfarce

Outlook keeps track of e-mail addresses for people I've mailed, and also
offers to autocomplete addresses of previous contactees when I'm typing one
in (even though they're not in my contact list).

What are these functions called;
Where are the data files stored within Outlook or Windows; and
Where can I learn more about controlling these?

Thanks,

if you want to get rid of some of the automatic autocompletes who are not
in your Contact list ... simply arrow key down to the one you don't like and
then when it is selected hit the delete key.

The function that I believe that you are referring to is called
autocomplete. This function only applies to OL2002 (XP) and OL2003. The
information is actually stored in a hidden system folder called an NK2 file
which is the second iteration of the Nickname file.

We wrote a utility that will let you open, edit, change, add contact info.
to this file. It's called Owtlook. You can find it at
www.dcs-imaging.com/products.htm. You can contact me through that web site
and I'd be happy to provide you with additional information should you
desire...like how to "populate" a new NK2 file from your contacts folder,
etc.

Good luck and hope this helps,

Randy

If you want to delete individual entries, do as Soren suggested in his
reply -- start typing in a name and when the list comes up, point to the
entry you want to delete (so that it's highlighted) and press Delete. To
delete the whole cache and start over, look for a file with an .NK2
extension and rename it or move it. Outlook will start a new cache file the
next time an e-mail address is typed into the To: box. Note that if you're
using Windows 2000 or XP, you'll need to search in hidden and system folders
to find the .NK2 file (it also helps to have file extensions visible). And
there are always 3rd party programs like Owtlook if you want more control.
