auto update issue - xp home sp2. not able to authenticate

hello - i am trying to run windows update and i get the promp to authenticate
my windows. i go through the process but at the end it says that it can not
authenticate my copy of windows and the reason that is always given is that
the MS servers are not functioning properly. this has been the case for over
a week. i doubt that MS would leave something like that down for that long.
so.... question is why am i getting this message and how do i make it go
away? windows update is not letting me get any more updates without
authenticating.

and yes, before anyone asks a silly question, i do have an authentic version
of windows. i have not contacted my reseller yet (HP) as the directions on
the screen say to contact them and tell them about the reason auto update
failed but think it would be silly to talk to HP about MS servers not working
correctly. PLEASE HELP!

http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?in=en-us
Or go to microsoft.com/technet/security/tools,install microsoft update,it
replaces
windows update.
