How can I view the programs that auto start when xp first runs? I have so
many programs that start right away and I would like to have them only start
if I start them. Thanks for any advice on how I can view these programs and
change their settings.

Hey Pat

Click Start> Run> type in "msconfig" without the quotes.
Then go to the Startup tab. From there you can turn on or
off the ones you need or dont need. If you dont know what
it is and its running from the Windows system I would
leave it alone, along with any anti-virus software you
have running... Other than that you should be fine. You
will restart your computer and it will tell you that your
running on selective startup, just check the box for it
to never tell you again, and you computer will load tons
faster.

You =can= do it with MSCONFIG, however if you want to actually delete
any, or move them to a different location (from a particular user to
'all users', or to 'HKLM\run' key, or whatever) the (free) utility
startupcpl from
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

does a heck of a lot nicer job.
