Auto format numbers to show as $$ amounts

Whenever I type a number in word I would like word to automatically insert a comma, i.e. $1,000. Is there any easy way to do this?
 
No, there is no easy way to do that.

When I'm entering many numbers using the numberpad, I use Autocorrect to replace two
periods with a comma, so I don't have to take my hand off the numberpad. But I still
have to put it in - I don't know how to make Word format numbers like Excel.
