Auto Filter

In some xls files, when I filter using the auto filter feature, in the
lower right hand of the screen I get a message 2 of 300 records (for
example)

In other xls files, I do not get this message when I apply auto
filter. Is there a setting I am missing?

What version of Excel are you using, please?.....I don't get that at all in
XL97,SR2.....I usually have to set it up myself in the frozen area at the top.
