Auto-Filter Stops Displaying # of Sorted Records in Bottom Info Bar

Greetings: One of the Excel features I find particularly useful is
Auto-Filter, for counting the number of records that meet a specific sort
criteria.

For example, after turning on A/F, I select the down arrow next to the
column heading and pick a value from the displayed list of values contained
in that column. A/F then filters the column to display only those rows that
contain that selected value. In the information bar at the bottom left
corner of the desktop, the number of records meeting that criteria is
displayed as a function of the total records; for example "1327 of 1544
records".

Now here is my question. This is a useful way to quickly count records.
However, for no reason that I can discern, sometimes Excel simply stops
displaying that count and displays "Filter Mode" instead. Why does it do
this and what can I do to make it go back to displaying the numbers of
records??

THANKS IN ADVANCE11

John
