I'm working in Access 2002 (mistkae number 1, I know).

But recently, when a user opens a database called DbName.mdb, I find a file
file called DbName_Backup.mdb in the directory soon thereafter.

I delete the backup, but later it appears again. It doesn't seem to do this
when I open the db. Any enlightenment is appreciated. I've
compacted/repaired, etc. No corruption notices.

You may have the database set to compact on close. Access creates a file
named "yourdatabase_Backup.mdb" and then deletes it when the compact has
completed. If the compact fails for some reason, the backup file is not
deleted.

Pat, thanks for your quick response.

I don't see that option checked on my machine, but I haven't yet checked the
other user's setting.

Is it a setting particular to the db itself, or per the individuals choices
in their own Access application?

The setting is specific to the database. This could also happen if the user
manually selected to compact/repair the database.

Any other ideas then?

There's no way she's compacting or doing anything other than asking how do
you even open a database.

Thanks,
Michael
