auto-correct feature? signature line

when we type a line (pressing the underscore key several
times) as place for a signature in a printed document,
Word 2000 replaces it with a long black line across the
page. I know thatyou can hit "Backspace" to change it
back, but can you turn off this feature? I can't find it
in AutoCorrect
