Audio With MSN Messenger 6.2

L

Laurie Reid

Jonathan, I need help with MSN Messenger 6.2 audio. I am
trying to start using audio with a friend. We have been
using MSN Messenger for IM "chats" for a while now.
Recently, we tried using audio, but couldn't get it to
work. Neither of us has any real network or hardware
knowledge, so if you could in your responses please assume
we know nothing.

My Setup: I have Windows XP Pro, and connect via Verizon
DSL. I have a LinkSys Access Point/Router/Hub, and work
both wirelessly and wired. I recently purchased a set of
headphones (and a web cam) to use for audio and video via
MSN Messenger. I am also running McAfee Personal Firewall
Plus.

Her Setup: She has Windows XP Home Edition (but I would be
willing to upgrade her to XP Pro if it would help), and
she also connects via Verizon DSL. She shares her
husbands Apple "AirPort Extreme" to gain access to the
Internet. I sent her an identical set of headphones (and
web cam) to use. She is also running McAfee Personal
Firewall Plus.

Any and all help gratefully accepted!
Thank you.

Greetings Laurie,

This is going to be a tough scenario to try and make this work, but it may be possible (we'll
see).

Messenger makes use of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) in order to consistently establish
connections through routers and other types of "internet sharing" situations. Your Linksys
Router will have support for UPnP (either already built-in or via a firmware update at
http://www.linksys.com/download; you can find out how to upgrade the firmware at that link
and in the router manual), but you may just need to turn it on in the router configuration
(and if you do, you'll have to restart Messenger for the change to take effect; again just
look in the manual for how to get to the router configuration). You can quickly see if UPnP
is being detected on your router by clicking the Tools menu, then Options, then Connections
tab, and looking at the very bottom of the dialog (where it will indicate that you are or
aren't using a UPnP device).

The software firewall will be fine, just give Messenger full access to the Internet
connection (it should just ask).

The only real problem here will be the Airport Express, which does not have UPnP capabilities
(as far as I know) and may or may not support some of Messenger's "tricks" to help establish
connections. However, it's worth a try to see if it will work after making sure that your
own router is fine. If you still encounter an issue however, the DSL modem itself may be
stopping the connection as well and as such, which model do both of you have?

Get rid of messenger 6.2 delete it. Then get windows
messenger 4.7 built for windows Xp.
Also go into control panel network and internet
connections, open network connections right click on local
area connection properties and uncheck Qos Packet
Scheduler. Thst should get you up and running with your
voice conversations.
