audio/video problems

I have windows movie maker 5.1 for windows xp and when I record a dvd using
this program the audio and video are not sycronized. How can I fix this
problem? Which programs can I use to convert the files to ones that are
compatible with this program? and how do I know which files are compatible
with this program?
