Audio very scratchy...lots of 'white noise'

Hi. I have a new computer. When I play an .avi or .mpg, all I can really
hear is scratchy noise...the actual voice, etc. are barely audible. I have
tried many different players...same thing. I have adjusted my equalizer
settings until I can barely hear the 'white noise', but then I can't hear
much of anything else either. I have tried different files (the same files
don't do it on my other system). I have downloaded and installed a codec
package, thinking maybe that was it. No difference. What can I do? My
system plays music well, and system sounds OK. It seems to just be video
files.

Make sure you have current drivers for your sound card. Make sure you
don't have the subwoofer up on the desk next to the monitor. Check your
speakers - are they plugged into the right holes on the sound card? Do
you have them in the digital input instead of the analog input? Are the
speakers close to some device that could be causing interference?

Why would you want to plug speakers into input terminals?

You wouldn't. What I was trying to say - undoubtedly not as clearly as
someone like you would have liked - was that perhaps he had the
speakers plugged into the wrong holes on his sound card. All righty,
then.

Got microphone? Mute it, in addition to checking the speaker
connections.

Don't have a microphone...but I will mute setting anyway. aslo, will try
plugging into the 2 other spots while something is playing and see if it
makes any difference. I will let you know how I make out.

Make sure you're not plugged into the microphone socket on your sound card.
The green socket is usually the right one.

Download and install the correct/updated drivers for your sound card
(incorrect sound card drivers normally cause this problem).

David...I have tried all 3 jacks while the media is playing...there is
nothing from 2 and this distorted sound from the other. Anyway, I do have
system sounds and audio media plays fine...it's only when I play video/audio
that the sound distorts (the picture is perfect).
