Audio problems on Intel DG965HW Motherboard with Windows 2000

I'm trying to use regular 2-channel self-powered desktop speakers with
my new Intel DG965HW motherboard on Windows 2000, and the sound is
horrible. I get "normal" sound intermittently, but most of the time
it's just garbled.

Intel tech support told me to uninstall the sound driver, reset the
BIOS settings, and reinstall the sound driver. It didn't make any
difference.

Has anyone been able to get good sound out of this board with regular
stereo speakers and Windows 2000? I suspect that the sound is actually
being run by software and that Windows is not giving it high enough
priority over the other software running. Since I routinely listen to
music via WinAmp all day while I'm working, this is a rather annoying
problem for me.

Thanks,
Trevor

What software? any propritary stuff that uses specialized hardware?

Try removing ALL sound devices from safe mode.
reboot-enter setup
turn off sound chip in the bios.
reboot to windows -normal
check device manager for microsoft sound codecs,
they installed? good/ if they didn't, continue
now reboot and turn on sound chip in bios
then boot to windows normal

this routine has saved me on many occasions where integrated sound fails. A
good sign that something is going to go wrong is when XP hiccups on install
(or won't install) first time round. Usually endes up something integrated
lamed. Also this fixed (in some instances) that crackling - popping sounds
that SB cards sometimes experience in game play.

all playback software(media player ect.) does the same thing?

_appened-

Remove all sound software (from add/remove)
and ALL sound devices (from device manager)
