Audio Problem

System sounds such windows opening, closing, emptying
recycling etc. are not heard/don't play. However, the
audio system works fine - eg no problems with a music cd
or playing wav files - windows opening. The system audio
properties is set at Windows default. These sounds were
played up to a few days ago when i did several software
updates (not windows but other applications). Any
suggestions would welcomed. Thanks.

Try checking

Start | Settings | Control Pannel | Sound and Audio Devices--> Sounds tab.
See if you have a sound scheme selected or if there are any sounds selected
for the program events.

Are sound events defined (Control Panel -> Sounds, Sounds tab)? Maybe
you lost the preset or customized sound theme.
