At start up of the computer I get a message "Generic Host Process for Win 32
Services has encountered a problem & needs to close...etc Options given are
OK or cancel = debug. I click cancel & get another notice:
sychost.exe-application error
The instruction at "0x745f2780" referenced memory at "0x000000". The memory
could not be "read".
Click ok to terminate...click cancel to debug etc

When try to play a track on itunes there is no sound
On starting itunes it tells me it has "detected a problem with your audio
equipment"

In "Sounds & Audio Devices" the Default device has "No playback devices",
this is greyed out.

Help !!!!!!

It's the same problem I'm having here since this morning !!

Yesterday, before shutting down, Windows Update installed 2 updates to
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (925672 and 927978)... and I don't even had MSXML 4.0 SP2
installed !!

And this morning, the same svchost crash and all the services
associated with it stopped... Windows Audio, Task Scheduler, WMI,
Server, Security Center, DHCP Client and some more

The only thing I found in the event viewer is a 7032 event from Service
Control Manager with the following text: "The Service Control Manager
tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the
unexpected termination of the Windows Management Instrumentation
service, but this action failed with the following error: An instance
of the service is already running"

I think I found something that worked (at least for me)

I downloaded and installed MSXML 4.0 SP from MS (that previously wasn't
installed), after rebooting, the Windows Update Agent has detected
again the same two patches as needed, so I installed them again,
rebooted... and everything seems ok !!

I hope it's the same problem that you are having !! ;-)
