Audio Explosion on Shutdown

I have a new problem. Following a reformat and clean installation,
I now have a loud explosion sound on shutdown of XP Pro. I suspect
it may be related to the media player patch but that's mostly a guess. It's
never happened before, so it's something new that's causing it. I have an
onboard AC97 sound chip on my GA8-KNXP mobo. I tried reinstalling
the drivers, but that didn't help. I did not remove the Sound Devices in
dev mgr first, maybe I should try that. I'm hoping someone else may
be experiencing this and has found the cause. TIA

Look in the Sounds applet in Control Panel and disable the sound
associated with Windows Shutdown event.

Thanks, that one and all other sounds have already be removed, except for
mail notification so it must be something else.

Unfortunately, since we can't see your computer from here, you're going
to have to Sherlock this. Before you shut down, run Task Manager and
make a careful note of everything that is running. Perhaps you have
some sort of Internet connection software that is making a shutdown
noise. Or an instant messenger client. *Something* is closing and
making a sound, and the only way to find out is to examine what you've
got running, one program at a time. Unless you are seeing smoke coming
from the computer, you know it has to be a virtual noise and not a real
explosion.

Cheers,

VetMsgNT is the program causing the "explosion". I've
asked Computer Associates to prescribe a fix, since it's
a required item in MyeTrust Antivirus.

Hey, Mark! You found it! I'm glad you got it sorted out; even if it
isn't quite to your satisfaction, at least you know what was causing
the noise. Thanks for posting the solution.
