Audio Driver Messed Up

Chris Guimbellot

Hello,

A long time ago, I posted a question about an audio driver that I have not
working when I install Win2k. The original question and response are here:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=uG1q6AHR
CHA.2512%40tkmsftngp11&rnum=4&prev=/groups%3Fq%3Daudio%2Bguimbellot%26ie%3DU
TF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26hl%3Den

Basically, David told me to run Windows Update for the new driver (thanks
David). Anyway, under that scenario, I had installed Win2K from the disk,
hence no service packs. The problem now is that when I installed Win2K, I
slipstreamed SP4 into the distribution share. When I run use the update
driver wizard and search windows update, it tells me I already have the
correct driver installed.

In Device Manager, the device is listed as AC'97 Driver for Intel(r) 82801AA
Controller.

When I went to Intel's site, it told me to look at the numbers on the
motherboard itself. The problem with that is that there are no numbers on
the board that remotely coincide with the format Intel gives in their
examples. I think the reason is because the board is not an Intel board but
an OEM and it just uses Intel chips.

It also told me to look at the system BIOS, but when I ran setup upon
booting, there was no place to even get that info.

The PC is a Compaq Deskpro EX P1.0GHz. When I went to Compaq's site, there
were no Intel audio drivers for my model PC, just drivers for ADI and
Creative Labs.

I have exhausted everything I can think of. Any ideas would be most
appreciated. Thanks,

Chris

Jim,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunatley, when I downloaded the software and went
to the Motherboard | Chip area, I did not see anything that resembled
anything I was asked for on Intel's site. Below is the results it gave me:

--------[
Chipset ]-------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------

Chipset Properties:
Motherboard Chipset Intel Solano i815
In-Order Queue Depth 4
CAS Latency 3T
RAS To CAS Delay 3T
RAS Precharge 3T

Integrated Graphics Controller:
Graphics Controller Type Intel i752
Graphics Controller Status Disabled

AC'97 Audio Controller:
Audio Controller Type Intel 82801AA ICH
Codec Name Analog Devices
AD1885
Codec ID 41445360h

Memory Slots:
DRAM Slot #1 128 MB (SDRAM)
DRAM Slot #2 256 MB (SDRAM)

AGP Properties:
AGP Version 2.00
AGP Status Disabled
AGP Aperture Size 64 MB
Supported AGP Speeds 1x, 2x, 4x
Fast-Write Not Supported
Side Band Addressing Supported, Disabled

Chipset Manufacturer:
Company Name Intel Corporation
Product Information
http://www.intel.com/products/browse/chipsets.htm
Driver Download
http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/index.htm

Problems & Suggestions:
Problem AGP is disabled.
This may cause performance penalty.

Is there something I am missing here? I appreciate the help.

Hi Chris - Look just above the Chipset area at the Motherboard section
and tell me what it says in the line Motherboard ID (and any other
identifying information in the Motherboard Properties section). (Most
of the drivers for the AD 1885 appear to be the same for most OS's and
motherboards using the 815 chipset, but not all, so we need to pin that
down first.) Here's the one I think you need, but I can't be sure with
just the info you've given:

ftp://download.intel.com/design/motherbd/ew/WDM3034e_SM3.exe

Jim,

Thanks for the continued help. This little tool is pretty great. Below is
the results of the motherboard properties:

Motherboard Properties:
Motherboard ID <DMI>
Motherboard Name Compaq Deskpro

I guess this proves my initial thinking that this is an OEM board. Other
than that, this doesn't really tell me anything. Is there another set of
data I should be looking at?

I also went ahead and downloaded the file you recommended.

Thanks again,

Chris

Hi Chris - Well, I think that they're just basic Analog Devices drivers,
but with Compaq you can never be really sure - they often do weird
things. You might go ahead and try that download, AT YOUR OWN RISK. If
it doesn't work, you'll likely have to uninstall then reinstall the
audio in Device Manager using the default system drivers on the
reinstall. You might also want to check out Compaq DeskPro and see if
they've got audio drivers available for your specific model number. ??
Good Luck!

Hi Chris - Get Aida32 v.3.70 free, here:
http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php (Get the Enterprise Edition). Then
check Motherboard|Chipset

See if that helps.
