audio connection is rediculous

I'm having major difficulties with MSN Messenger 6 and the voice function.

I bought the latest Linksys router BEFSX41. It said "UPNP" on the front of
the box. I have activated UPNP in the router options and also plugged my PC
into the DMZ port on the back. I enabled DMZ in the router.

I am able to send files and do remote assistance no problem. The other
party sends me a webcam invite and I can see their video no problem (i dont
have a cam yet). However when I goto connect to this person with voice
communication, it just sits there saying "connecting". I unplugged my PC
from the router and went directly into my cable modem and I get the same
result.

Last night they bypassed their router while I was plugged into mine and we
still couldn't connect.

What am I doing wrong?

Greetings Bruce,

Here are some suggestions. firstly, make sure both you and your contact have gone through the
Audio (and Video) Tuning Wizard in Messenger. To do so, open the main Messenger window,
click the Tools menu, then Audio Tuning Wizard, then go through the wizard to select and test
your audio/video devices.

Then, both of you should verify that the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall isn't on --
click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and
Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet
connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet
Connection Firewall is unchecked. As well, if your contact is using some type of third-party
firewall (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.) have them make sure that Messenger is
set to "Permit All", "Allow All" or "Medium" (ZoneAlarm).

Finally, you and your contact might try turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so,
click Start, then
click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and Internet connections
then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet connection, then click
Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try again..

Thanks for the info Jonathan.

I will check the QOS tonight.

Some more info for you:
I am not running the XP built in firewall and neither is the other party.
Audio tuning wizard has been run on both systems.

I was on a different voice chat last night with another buddy. It worked
great. I went to connect to the original party to voice chat but again, no
go. I was bypassing my router at this point in time.

The part that really confuses me is that when we do a webcam chat I see
their video no problem. File transfers work without a hitch. Remote
assistance works great. However, only the voice fails.

Interesting indeed.
I've been an admin and experienced user on MS networks for quite a few years
now. I'm 2 exams away from my MCSE and I have to admit that this is really
making me feel like MS needs to have certifications for its Messenger too.

These are features of windows and MSN that should just work period. End
users (including myself) should not have to goto these extents just to get a
simple voice chat going. Please relay this info to MS Jonathan.

Will report back later this afternoon : )

Disabled QOS on both systems. This time we connected ok. Problem was that
he could hear me but I couldn't hear him. He bypassed the router and had
the same issue.

haha good point

I beleive he does have an Intel NIC. It's a Dell and I think they either
use 3com or Intel as their default NIC's for new pc's. We are both trying
to use MSNM v.6

Is there a fix available for this via Intel or MS ?

Thanks
Bruce

By the way I recently found this article on the web

For people having issues with one way audio on their Intel NIC cards with
MSN Messenger 6, I believe we have a workaround.

It appears the issue is being caused by the Intel driver's implementation of
802.1p, which is enabled by default in these drivers. To disable this, go to
the properties for your network card, click the Configure button in the
General page, click the Advanced tab, Select 802.1p support, and set the
value to disabled.

Let me know if this helps or not. Also let me know if the value was already
set to disabled. We'll work with Intel to get them to fix their driver in
the meantime.
----------------
Do you happen to have an Intel 10/100ve Network card? If so, try
copy/pasting the text below into Notepad and then save as rtp.reg, then run
the file and it'll create this regkey for you which should get audio to work
for you.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RTP]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RTP\QOS]
"Enable"=dword:00000002

Gonna try this later this evening. Will report back the results then.
