Audio cables for optical drives

I have a P4C800E-Deluxe MB with onboard sound, which I plan to use, for a
while anyway. Neither the MB or the retail DVD or OEM CD (of course) came
with the audio connector that plugs into the opptical drive(s) and then (I
assume) into the MB's internal Audio connectors. Do I need to buy these
seperately?

If you want sound then you do unless you want to make them, but the cost
is cheap. New Egg for example has them for a dollar (with 4 dollars
shipping)

If you enable digital sound in device manager and you don't need to plug
earphones into the CDRom, you don't need that cable anymore.

You do NOT need to use the optical drives' audio cables if you will be using
Windows XP. XP uses the data cable for the audio.

All operating systems can use the data cable for audio, not just XP, but
as PWY points out, you need the analog out cable if you want to use the
headphone jack on the drive. For those with slower processors disabling
digital audio will allow music cds to play without slowing down other tasks.
