in "SPY-ware HELL".... ( whew )...

But I still have the.. "HomePageLock" ( with IE )...

I saw your earlier note.. RE: "Tweak Line# 63"

I downloaded it .. ( "HomePageUnlock.reg" )
But I don't how to use it ???

Is the "reg" file extention "excutecutable" ???
Do I just "execute" it ... like an "exe" patch ????

As "Johnny-5" said ... Need more INPUT !!!

Well.. that would be just fine and dandy...
.... If I were a "mind reader".... but I am not !!!

You "MVP" folks are very helphul .. ( usually )...
And from the astronomical number of help
requests that flow through this NG .. I certainly
understand that you are * BUSY * !!!

I also understand the "tweak" file I downloaded
.... "HomrPageLock.reg" is a registry entry..
but there are ( probably ) thousands of registry
entries in XP. Am I supposed to just start by
trying to GUESS where this particular entry
goes.. then keep guessing .. until maybe I may
* eventually * make the right GUESS ???

Yes.. I suppose I could do that. However..
I would want to take time out to * VOTE *
in the Nov '94 presidential election.. then I
could come back and keep GUESSING !!!

What part of "right-click the .reg file and choose "Merge"" did you not
understand? The file will be automagically merged into your Registry.

Given help ?????????

Yes ... I can read !!!!!!!
And I can comprehend .. but comprehend *** WHAT *** ???

I assumed that meant right click and "merge"..
from anywhere .. like executing a "patch"...

Sooo.. ( last night .. actually early morning )...
I "right-clicked" and selected "merge" ..
... directly from the desk-top ...
( like installing a "patch" )..

*** BUT ***
Since that procedure did not have any effect at all
Since my browser WILL STILL NOT ACCECT
any change in the home page.. designation.

Since I repeated the "merge" process several times...
changing my ( designated ) home page each time..
clearing browser cache and cookies.. and rebooting
several times.. and since the same %$#&^*&%$#
SPY-ware trash is still the *lock-in* home-page..

None of this has anything to do with MY READING..
NOR MY COMPREHENSION ( nor lack of same ).

The help offered.. DOES NOT WORK !!!!

Hey.. folks .. I've been fighting THIS MESS
.... day-and-night ... LAST FRIDAY. !!!!

I even performed a complete ( repair ) reinstalled
of XP Sunday afternoon ( which didn't help !!! )

The Lavasoft "AD-Aware" utility has ( thankfully )
resolved most of the problems I've had .. * BUT *
my browser home page still remains * LOCKED *.

Soooo ..... NOW WHAT ??????

You can also click (or double-click) on it and it will ask if you want to
merge it into the registry.

Dean,
Kelly has directions for using both REG and VBS files at the very top of
her Tweaks page.

Hell! He doesn't know what "merge" means!

Thanks Sharon...

I will certasinly keep that in mind ... because I sill
be an XP "newbie" with questions .. for a while.
( I will "FAV" .. Kelly site for future reference).

But for right now ... ( WHEW ) ...
my IE home-page is no longer LOCKED !!!

I tried 3 things I hadn't already tried in this mess.
And I think I know which* ONE * of them has
* UNLOCKED * my IE browser-home page.

But I'll relate all 3 in order of occurance..
( as follows ):.

{ 1 )
I tried switching my designated browser start up
page from Google.com to eBay.com.
( 2 )
I switched from Jack Daniel's to Jose' Quervo.
( 3 )
I switched my old IE icon.. to a "fresh" IE icon.

And * FINALLY * no more "home-page-lock".
So if you get another XP "newbie" with this same
browser homet-page-lock.. one of these 3 switches
may help. My specific reasons for witches 1 & 2..
would a bit off topic... but I will explain switch 3.
(as follows ):..

I noticed that when I clicked the "home" button
on the browser tool bar.. it went to my designated
home-page.

But the the quick-launch IE icon down on the
task bar still got the SPY-ware designated page.
( Hmmm !!! ) Checking the icon's properties...
( Hmmm !!! ) The Icon's "comment" window...
( Hmmm !!! ) There was an ID-name (alias)..
apparenty a registry link to the SPYware page.

Being an XP "newbie" I had not notice such
"comments" in short-cut icons. Win-98SE
has no comment... with user-edit access.

Sooo.. I just created a new short-cut icon..
which does not *lock* the IE start-page to
some enigmatic link to the registry.

No more *locked* browser home-page !!!

Good night all. I've had a BAD week-end.

I switched from Jack Daniel's to Jose' Quervo.

<g> (don't know exactly how new you are but that's a grin)

That's probably what you needed to do all along to fix this ;) <-- a wink

Am glad you have it sorted out. These browser parasites can be a pain in
the .....well, you know.

Take care!

Yo... Sharon !!!

You see.. the thing is .. when exasperating little
problems seem to defy *reasonable* solutions..
and you think you've tried * EVERYTHING *..
sometimes a slight change in perspective really
can help. And of course.. until you try chasing
Tennessee sour-mash with Mexican tequila --
you haven't really tried * EVERYTHING * !!!

OK seriously .. ( 2 points worth mentioning ):
(1)
I've been running XP only about a month.
I'm still finding new qualities (and quirks)..
and most of them are "pleasant surprises".
(2)
The help you "MVP" volunteers provide is
*very* worthwhile.. and much appreciated.

THANKS TO ALL !!!
G'night.....
