I have changed the file assocaitions in the set associations control panel.
This does not appear to have solved my problem as I have to save the
attachments and open from the saved file. This works OK, but I want to open
direct from the mail attachments just for convenience.
Any one else got or had this problem, I have Vista basic is this part of the
problem?

Ensure that WM has all its Defaults set?
Go to Default Programs, either from the Start menu or in the Control Panel.
Also
When you set a program to open a file type remember to tick the box on the
dialogue to 'always use this program',

WinMail may not figure out the corresponding program needed to open it
correctly, depending upon the file type. You can try mac's suggestion, but
I think for certain file types, you'll have to save it first. Also, don't
try editing an attachment you have opened directly without saving it first,
as the changes will always be lost. Its not like Office.

Exactly what file types/extensions are we talking about? Wouldn't be a PowerPoint (PPT/PPS) file would it? No, Vista isn't the problem here. It's most likely the default program settings. You may not HAVE an application that works for that extension. Tell me what it is and I'll see what I can do.

Bob,
I have problems with doc and pdf extensions at present haven't really tried
others yet.

They open alright from folders but that means disk space and I don't really
want to have to spend time saving and deleting files that just need a quick
browse to determine the contents and anyway thats the point of having a
seamless system just as MS talk about.

Curious! Go into the Default Programs. Select the view of extensions. Look for the ".doc" extension and manually select it for WORD. Then do the same with ",pdf" and Adobe Reader. It should have done it automatically on app install but maybe the file got corrupt. Unselect it, then reselect it for each type. Best I can come up with for now.
