I have some email with attachments and windows live blocks the attachements.
How do I get windows live to let me open attachments from friends or family.

Your reference to "windows live" is puzzling. This forum is dedicated to the
email program known as Windows Mail. If that is indeed what you are using,
read on:
Inability to open attachments in Windows Mail is a known issue that is affecting
some who installed IE8. One workaround is to uninstall IE8, which reverts you
back to IE7. If you decide to uninstall IE8, follow these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Instead of uninstalling IE8, another option is to upgrade
your email program to Windows Live Mail:

I have the same problem and tried your suggestions, to no avail. i test from
my work computer. the emails have the attachement included, i see a
paperclip, but can not see or open the attachment. i tried a picture a pdf
and a word doc. i cc-ed myself to another email account: attachment ok. i
have another old XP-driven computer with Outlook 2000: attachment ok. I'm
getting pretty desperate. If I send my self an email via hotmail or Gmail on
the same computer the attachment can be seen and opened. so it's receiving
emails with attachements from "outside" ??
i have added the email account from my work computer to the emails to be
trusted. etc.etc. help please.

Thank you for the link to that article. Their comment that the RTF format
"is not very common outside Outlook" is incorrect. I don't know what to do
to get through to them, but I will communicate with the "About.com" site.

Sounds like you are talking about attachments sent from Outlook.
The explanation for that problem is here:
http://email.about.com/od/outlooktips/qt/et121705.htm

The basic problem is that Outlook, by default, uses a proprietary
form of encoding for attachments, which is not readable by
non-Outlook mail clients.
Ask the sender to resend using either plain text (preferred) or
standard HTML format. For more on this issue see:
http://email.about.com/od/outlooktips/qt/et121705.htm

Yeah, they probably meant to say "the special RTF format known
as MS-TNEF...".

That would certainly make sense. I have not yet researched it, but I would
start by searching for "MS-TNEF".

Yeah, they probably meant to say "the special RTF format known

For what it is worth, I got distracted because my theory is that Microsoft's
Rich Text Format (RTF) is a variation of IBM's Revisable-Form-Text (RFT).
The name Revisable-Form-Text is very logical, especially in the context in
which there is also a Final-Form-Text format. The name Rich Text Format is
not logical to me. The relevance of IBM's RFT is that (if it is relevant) it
shows that the RTF has history going back before Outlook and even before
Microsoft. So it was my intent to gather that evidence for both About.com
and Wikipedia.org.

Thank you, but I don't see anything about IBM's RFT in that. It certainly
helps to have the specification of RTF though.
