I am running windows vista home basic. I keep trying to open a doc attachment
but every time Iclick open a blank screen appears and then goes away taking
me back to a pop up that asks if I want to open the document or save it. I'm
not very good with computers so if you can help me, please keep it as simple
as possible. Thank you

Kathy, do you have MS Word installed either as a separate application or as
a part of MS Office? If yes, are you able to open other .doc files without
issue? If yes, there are a couple of possibilities. Once, you have
antivirus software that might be preventing you from opening the file. Save
the file as directed and scan the file for viruses even if it came from a
known source. If clean, try opening the saved file. If it still won't
open, it sounds as though the file is corrupted, contact the person who sent
it to you and have them send it again. NOTE: it is always a good idea to
first save any attachment and scan it for viruses before opening it.

I have saved it and I have had the person send it again. I don't have MS
word and I've never tried tosave a document before. I just scanned it for
viruses and it seems tobe clean.

Okay, Kathy, it won't open because you need to have the application
installed with which the file extension, in this case, doc, is associated.
You have no such application installed. However, There are viewers for MS
Office applications. Find out from the person who sent it what version of
Office or Word they used to produce the document. Then, go to the following
website:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/HA010449811033.aspx

Scroll to Word Converters and Viewers at the above link and click the
appropriate version, whatever version the sender has told you it was and use
the viewer to open the file. NOTE: This is only a viewer, it will not allow
you to make any changes or notations in the document.
