attachments sent as .dat files

I

Ian Dixon

I have Office 2000 Professional on a laptop running
Windows XP Professional.

I am connected to a LAN and whenever I send an attachment
such as a Word or Excel file to an external address, all
they receive is a .dat file which they cannot open.

If I send the same file to the same address using another
destop PC (running Windows 2000) on the same network,
attachments are sent and received correctly.

Can anyone help?
Thanks,
