Hi Folks

I don't know whether or not this fault might be due to the Service Pack I
recently downloaded but its a ****** nuisance. I have to 'Save to' a
non-Mail folder then, using Windows Explorer, open it there.

Anyone found a cure, please?

Cheers,
John (IDontBelieveIt)

It seems that you recently installed IE8. Right?
If so, you get bitten by a bug which affects many systems (not the
majority).
Anyone found a cure, please?

No cure yet, except uninstalling IE8.

The problem can be reduced to JPG and TXT files with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail. Select
Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

The same thing has happened to me also, but I think by the time Microsoft team
works out there cluster screw up you might find the answers you need through
other sources.

WinMail: Tools | Options | Security | Block images... <=if you
disable/uncheck this option, does the behavior persist?

Have you installed IE8 as well as SP1?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8 and/or SP1?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Do you have an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?
<=Just asking for now!!

Hi Rainald

Many thanks for replying. Yes, I did install IE8. Most of the attachments
I receive are .pdf files so your suggested method would be fine. Thanks.

Cheers
John

Hi PA Bear

Thanks for replying. I'll have a go at Rainald's suggestion. Answers to
points you raised:-

WinMail: Tools | Options | Security | Block images... <=if you
disable/uncheck this option, does the behavior persist?
I might try it and see

Have you installed IE8 as well as SP1?
Yes, both

anti-virus application or security suite
AVG free is installed. No anti-spyware other than Defender. No
third-party firewall.

Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8 and/or SP1?
No.

McAfee application ever been installed?
Came pre-loaded. I removed because of troubles with Windows Mail.

Do you have an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?
Maybe but I don't want to go down this road.

Thanks again. Hope the above info maybe of some use.

Cheers
John

Let us know if that fix works. If not, post the exact error message you get.

Hi Gary and Rainald

I did not have a shortcut to Windows Mail (my Dell keyboard provides press
button access) so I created a one - the 'Start in' field already had
%UserProfile% in it. I tested and found that my .pdf files now open ok.

Many thanks
John

Yes, the workaround should enable PDFs to be opened.

How about other file types - especially TXT and JPG attachments?
You may send test mails with attachments to yourself.

Hi again ....

I've just downloaded the latest Vista updates and find that the
'attachments' problem appears to have been put right.

Cheers
John

Thanks for that report. The "second Tuesday of the month"
regular Windows Updates were released yesterday. I hope
others are finding the same relief from the attachments issue.
I never had the problem to begin with so I can't confirm it
personally.

I did so last night.
Nothing changed on my system :-( :-(

Yes, being aware if that I downloaded the updates (16 altogether) last
night already before they were announced by Windows Update.

Hope was in vain.

Not me, unfortunately. {siiiigh}

You're really lucky ;-)
I'm wondering whether perhaps I was cruel to animals in one if my former
lives ;-)

Hi Rainald

I spoke too soon(!) - pdf files opened OK but I later found an html file
wouldn't!

Cheers

Really sad.
I had seriously hoped that an update might fix the problem.
But it doesn't.

I was sure that you would come up with the correction sooner or later.
