attach a file

can't attach a file, it is inserted instead, why?

Most people would consider attaching and inserting to be the same thing. Perhaps you can explain why you think they're different, and give your version of Outlook.

outlook 2003. inserting puts file in the text field, attaching puts it under
the subject box. it is messy when inserted in the text field. thanks.

Change your message format from rich text to HTML or plain text. That will also ensure that non-Outlook recipients will be able to get the file.
