Is it me or are only ATI people having problems with their video drivers?
Because Vista can't figure out how to use my card, most things graphical
don't work. (aero, live thumbnails, DVD maker). I'm frustrated, this
shouldn't be so difficult, there also should be a way to override Vista's
settings. Maybe it's time to go back to Nvidia.

Specs

AMD x2 3800
ATI X700 Pro 256 AGP
MSI NEO Platinum MB (Nvidia 3 chipset)
1 gb OCZ Gold Ram
Vista 5600 64 bit

best drivers to use right now are the ones from the vista install dvd
i'm running 2 with nvidia and 1 with ati.
stock vista video drivers run games and play video fine.
all the problems i've heard so far are from people installing
ati or nvidias beta drivers from the web.
so far 1 week 24/7 running games and playing dvd movies
and no video related problems with the stock vista drivers from MS.
no bsod's from the os either.

the download is a dvd iso file that you burn to a dvd so if you downloaded
vista you have the dvd.
i haven't tried the 64 bit version of vista because i don't run any software
that would benefit from 64 bit over 23 bit.
the stock drivers that install from the vista install are the most stable
drivers out
right now.
if you download the ati beta or the nvidia beta drivers thats what your
getting
a rc1 os with beta video drivers.
all i've heard from people who've tried to run other driver's they have down
loaded
are bsods and bugs.
did you verify that your download was good by doing a checksum?
could be that you have a bad copy

i would run 32bit if i where you.
64 bit support is even more sparce than 32 bit right now on vista.
nforce 3 boards have a few problems that i remember also
even with xp maybe check the msi forums for a bios update.
vista will run ok on 1 gig of ram for surfing and office tasks.
2 gig is better for games and 3d apps.
also i've noticed on a older machine that vista would not boot sometimes
and i traced it down to unused devices that where turned on in the bios,
namely the game port, so turn off stuff in your bios that your not using.
the only drivers i've had to touch to get vista rolling on any install so
far where the sound drivers.
