AGP 4x
80 GB ATA-66 HD

How can AGP 4x be on a machine with a Radeon x800 pro card? I would
have expected AGP 8x or PCI-E.

Also, your HDD is slow, most these days are ATA-133.

Could this be the reasons why?

The card is designed for AGP 8x, but it can also be used on AGP 4x.

So if I want ATA-133, I have to replace my motherboard ??

Yes, but AGP 4x is slower than AGP 8x. It is like driving a Ferrari on
a dirt road. Sure it will drive but the road slows the car down.

In fact I'd say the AGP 4x slot is the cause of your slow Doom 3
performance. Unfortunately for this, you'd need to replace your
motherboard :(

Not necessarily. You could try to buy an ATA/133 PCI-IDE card. You put
the card in a PCI port, which has IDE-133 cables. The one which I use
is:

Although there are probably many others out there.

No, it's not at all like driving a Ferrari on a dirt road.
AGP4X has enough bandwidth to far exceed the need for that
game (as well as any current game). PCI might be a
different matter but AGP only went to 8X with very minor
gains. Same with PCI-Express.

No, plenty of people use 4X even on 8X boards because it's
more stable. 8X simply not needed until that is the
bottleneck, which it isn't.

It is not going to be the bottleneck either. Hard drive
performance is seldom an issue with games except during
level-loading, sublevel-loading.

For all we know his CPU could be overheating and throttling
back to a very low speed. He has not reported on tests of
the various parameters.
