I disabled on-board video & installed new higher res ATI Radeon x1650. All of
my desktop icons were changed to generic icon. I am running Vista Ultimate
You can delete links and regenerate them all. this will be the simplest
operation in terms of time and efforts. I hope it is not a symptom of more
serious problem but I cannot see which one?

You need to re-run your Windows Experience Index. Then go into Personalize,
Theme, and make sure it's set back to Vista. Aero should run after that.
