i know you don't wish to hear this. I'd just have to say ATI has come a long way baby - since the 9200. I've got the 9800pro cranked all the way up in Far Cry - and ummm.. i've paid an arm and a leg for that 9800pro to huh. At least you CAN de-tune Far Cry and enjoy the new bleeding edge CryEngine ! Gawd, I mean look at those poor Nvedeo Kramugons - blue liquid dirt moving against brown solid dirt. gag me.

Real pictures, real time (9800pro):

Scalability was an issue and this far the engine's minimum requirements, as expressed through those of Far Cry are: P3 or AMD equivalent, 800 MHz, 256MB Ram and a GeForce3. The current Crytek recommended specs are: P4 or AMD equivalent, 3GHz, 512MB Ram and Radeon 9800 Pro.

Shaders: A script system used to combine textures in different ways to produce visual effects. Supports real time per-pixel lighting, bumpy reflections, refractions, volumetric glow effects, animated textures, transparent computer displays, windows, bullet holes, and shinny surfaces.

Terrain: Uses an advanced heightmap system and polygon reduction to create massive, realistic environments. The view distance can be up to 2km when converted from game units.

Lighting and Shadows: A combination of precalculated, real time shadows, stencil shadows and lightmaps to produce a dynamic environment. Includes high-resolution, correct perspective, and volumetric smooth-shadow implementations for dramatic and realistic indoor shadowing. Supports advanced particles technology and any kind of volumetric lighting effects on particles.

Fog: Includes volumetric, layer and view distance fogging to enhance atmosphere and tension.

I know what you are asking though........ Why does the 9800pro do this so well compared to your current video card.

sure sounds great - maybe Far Cry is Direct X 9 and your card needs to "emulate" all the Dx9 api's and that get real slow real fast.

Finally got it working really nice. The problem was
the "lighting effects" setting. Apparently that setting
really screws up a 9200. I changed it to low, and
immediately I got better lighting effects plus the
low brightness problem I was having went away.
Then, in addition, I was able to set "water" to medium,
and "details" and detail "filter" to medium. That gave
me great water and surf ... sand and pebbles on the
beach .. much better grass .. and my frame rate is
very good. I see no "load" pauses at all. I now have
this card running every bit as well as some 9800s
I've seen. I'll go for "special effects" next, but right
now, it looks great. System is: P4/800, 500meg, 160gig,
Dx9.0b, and catalyst 4.5 drivers for XP. It is first
rate except the video card is a bit dated. I'm pretty
sure that is where +cOre- is having his problem. What
the heck is this "lighting effects" doing? That is what
I shut off on my ATI 9000 system too. Made a HUGE
difference in all my games after that. I don't understand
why it affected the other games either, but it certainly
applied some kind of correction to my system that
has held.

My 9200 is a little bit better than that spec. It clocks at 500. But
I agree that it must be simulating in software what the 9800 is
doing much faster in hardware. Still, my P4 is a screamer, and
I think is making a big difference. That has allowed my 9200
to perform nearly as well as a 9600 on a lesser mobo. So I
have some really nice dynamic lighting and special effects ..
esp reflections on the water and lots of frag effects. That one
default setting .. even after autodetect .. was really screwing
the 9200 up. Even more surprising is the quality of my 9000
.. which is also better than the average 9000. Mine is 128 meg
and is clocked higher too. It is on an AMD mobo, which
for some reason seems to like to play games ??? There
I have very good dynamic lighting, but I haven't really tried
the same medium settings yet. I'm too busy saving Valerie
and getting my ass kicked. When I'm done, I'll post on trying
to up the ante with that card too. I think it is going to work
because it too must be simulating hardware in software.

Um, I don't think so. On my 9800 Pro I've got everything maxed (except no AF,
and 4xAA) at 1024x768. You're 9200 couldn't do this even at 800x600.
