ATI 9800 Pros, PSUs, and you - update

Well turns out the problem was a DOA card, got the replacement last
night and it fired right up and it's working great. I spent a few
minutes wandering around Mars City and it looks STUNNING! I'm running
the 9800 with a Dell 2005 FPW LCD monitor and it is absolutely gorgeous!
But WOW do these cards give off a lot of heat! I put a 2-fan fan card in
the PCI slot just under the 9800 and I reversed the case fan that's in
the panel right by the card so that it's blowing out. Haven't had any
problems other than the fact that I can't set my AGP in the ATI control
panel to run at 8X even though my Gigabyte mobo supports it, oh well.
Two thumbs up for the 9800! For the price ya can't beat it!

Actually the case fan at the back of the case is supposed to blow outward.
Funny that it was set to do the opposite on your Dell. Compared to the
comparable Nvidia card with its monstrous heatsink and fan, the 9800 gives
off much less heat. Have you installed the motherboard drivers for your PC?
One of the drivers is the AGP driver and it will allow your card to run at
8X. Otherwise the mobo's will default to 4X, which doesn't actually affect
performance. Also check your bios to make sure that it has been set for 8X
AGP.

I figured that the first card was probably bad but I'm glad to hear that all
is well with the replacement! My 9800 Pro is coming up on two years old now
and I'm not going to ditch it until next year. Speaking as a gamer, it's
been a long, long time since I was able to sit on the same video card for
three years.

Hope there is still a inlet providing air flow. And not just a bunch of
exhaust fans fighting each other.

On quite a few Dells the rear fan (underneath the PSU) is ducted to the CPU.
If he were to reverse THAT fan, he will be in for an overheating CPU in
nothing flat.

Roger that. My PC is a homemade Athlon machine with a nice Thermaltake
case and lots of fans-2 blowing in from the front, 2 blowing out the
back, one blowing out the top and 2 in the side panel. I'm thinking
about tapping into a nearby AC duct in my ceiling and somehow dumping
cold air into the case.
