Athlon XP 2600 and DDR PC266

Chipset is SiS 746FX says it takes DDR 400

What I want to know is I will be upgrading my CPU from XP1800+ to XP2600+,
but RAM is high and will buy this another time.

Can I use DDR PC 2100 RAM with the new Barton (333Mhz FSB) core CPUs?

I think I can because on the K7S5As, you could use PC133 with 266FSB system.

The core isnt barton like I first thought, its a thoroughbred
333FSB

Where can I find info related to this. Ive looked hard, but it just seems to
be assumed knowledge. AMD's site is crap.

Go to AMD site: www.amd.com

Click link for 'AMD Athlon XP tech docs' under Technical and Support
Resources > Processors.

Download or look at appropriate Datasheet for CPU

AFAIK, Palomino is Model 6, Thoroughbred is Model 8, and Barton is model 10.

Look at Ordering information section of datasheet/s and check the OPN
against the marking on your CPU.

Wasn't that hard to find it............ Though I must admit, I couldn't
quickly find anything that linked core Codenames to Model numbers...........

So far as memory frequency support goes, Barton vs Thoroughbred
doesn't matter.

Go into your BIOS (even while running the 266FSB (could be called
133FSB, DDR266), XP1800 CPU) and look for an option to run the memory
asynchronously.

That is, to ru n the memory at -33 or ratios like 4:3 or 5:4, making
sure the first (larger) number is corresponding to the CPU FSB, and
the second to Memory (FSB:Memory ratio), or of course the inverse, a
3:4 or 4:5 ratio for Memory:FSB ratio.

If the BIOS allows it then you should be able to use it, though of
course at a performance penalty compared to synchronous DDR333 memory
bus.

I know not whether your particular motherboard has any unusual,
relevant issues.

ok thanks for that, the motherboard I am using is based on the SIS 747FX
chipset which supports DDR PC2100 PC2700
This is made by ECS/PC Chips, so I think I am ok using a 333FSB with the
slower 266 DDR memory.
