At a loss

I installed SP2 and did other updates a couple of days ago. The first day
everything was fine. The second day I started getting messages about memory
errors during shutdown. Today, I can't run IE, Firefox, or System Restore.
Explorer runs ok. I tried getting to Restore using the command line, and it
still crashed (all crashes have resulted in a report to MS). I'm at a loss -
outside of wiping the disk and starting over I don't have any idea where to
even start troubleshooting - let alone fixing. Thanks in advance

Boot to the XP setup CD, and press 'r' for recovery console, run the command : CHKDSK /R
