Asus K8NE-deluxe with AMD Cool n Quiet?

C

Chris

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has been successful in getting AMD Cool n Quiet
to run with this motherboard? My setup is:

BIOS flashed to 1004
Athlon 64 processor driver ver. 1.1.0.14
Asus Cool and Quiet utility ver. 1.008
Windows XP Home SP1

in BIOS:

AMD Cool N'Quiet enabled
ACPI 2.0 support YES
ACP APIC Suppport Enabled
Other BIOS settings at default

In Windows:

Power Scheme set to 'Minimal Power Management'

With Cool n Quiet disabled in the BIOS, the CPU runs at 2000 MHz and
1.52 volts. With it enabled it runs at 1000 MHz 1.052 volts and does not
seem to change (if I start a video capture I get lots of dropped
frames). The ASUS utility also does not appear to be working properly -
it displays the CPU speed but not the voltage (the 'tool tip' on the
cool n quiet system tray icon shows frequency and voltage) and cannot be
minimised or closed from its user interface (only way to close it is to
right click on its sys tray icon).

Anyone any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

I have the same MB but I'm not using cool-n-quiet.
But you don't say if you've enabled classic start menu,
which is part of the instructions for enabling it.
But I don't know if doing so will fix your problem.
Thats why I'm not using it I don't want to use the
classic start menu.

I think (from my reading of the MB manual) that it is just the Control
Panel that needs to be set to 'Classic View', which it is on my pc
(though I'm not sure why?).

Thanks,

I think your right. Must have been half asleep when I
read that the first time.

Hi Chris,

I have a similar problem on a different motherboard, [basic] K8V and
XP Pro rather than Home. I can get CnQ running fine from the
Administrator account, but get exactly the same symptoms as you when I
boot and log in under my normal limited user account, CPU stuck in
first gear. I would be interested to know if you experience the same
or whether all user accounts have this problem on your system, as
yours is the only post I have found so far that seems related to my
problem.

On my system I only need log in as the Adminstrator, as a second
logon, for the CPU to start working up to full speed on limited
accounts, no need to run any monitoring apps or dashboards.

Just to tidy up my own post for anyone finding this thread, my
particular problem (not necessarily that of the OP) was resolved with
XP Service Pack 2

Make sure you installed the AMD Processor drivers from the Asus K8N-E
CD, and the power setting is set to minimal.

Thanks for the info Phil - I don't think it is the same problem, but it
may have the same cure.

Cheers,

Chris.

Make sure you installed the AMD Processor drivers from the Asus K8N-E

As a follow up, I have ended up with the latest processor driver from
the AMD website (and power setting minimal) and CnQ is working after a
fashion, however the ASUS utility doesn't seem to work (always showing
1000MHz). The AMD 'PowerNow!' Dashboard shows the speed / voltage
'blipping' to higher levels than the baseline but there seems to be a
timelag - when capturing video there are periodic errors registered. I
guess it could be antivirus software or another process swallowing up
resources before CnQ can react, and may just be a 'feature' of CnQ?

Cheers,

Chris.
