ASUS A8V Deluxe No POST / No Fans

 Some fathers & sons have a dream to build a car together.
My son’s dream was to build his dream PC. It has turned into a
nightmare!

I have an ASUS A8V Deluxe MB Bios ver 1007
AMD 64 4000+ (939) with Gigabyte Rocket HS
Corsair 512MB VS512MB400
ATI 9600 XT 256MB AGP
Aspire 500W ATX Dual Fan Power Supply

I cannot get the MB to POST! - no beep codes – no rotation of the
power supply fan, the HS fan or the AGP fan – just the Green LED
indicator on the MB.

I first thought it was a grounding issue - so I have attempted to run
the MB out of the ATX case on a cardboard box with just (both) ATX
power supply cables attached, processor with HS fan connected , and
single RAM stick in slot B1 – still no beep codes or Power supply fan
rotation!

I have tried even another A8V MB (Bios ver 1008) and another power
supply (ANTEC 400w ATX) with exactly the same result – no power
supply or HS fan rotation – just the green LED glowing.

I have confirmed that the 2 ATX power connectors are properly seated
and oriented. It is like a circuit is not being completed somehow…..

I have reset the BIOS

The ASUS web support page says the BIOS ver 1007 and greater does
support the AMD64 4000+.

I have tried 2 different A8V MBs and 2 different power supplies.

This is what the ASUS support reply was (can you say knowledge base?)
:

BEGIN <<Dear Friend :
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Ailon and I would be assisting you today

Sir, Please take your motherboard and others parts out off the
chassis, put motherboard onto a flat desktop, connect everything needed
to boot with, then try to power on system (remove all external device
including system harddisk ),will the system powered on and boot up ?

If not ,Please reset CMOS defualt by clearing CMOS:

1. Cut the power supply for the whole system and open your chassis;
2. Take out the CMOS battery from the battery socket;
3. Install your battery with "reverse side" that means turn the
battery 180 degree and put in into battery socket;
4. Hold about 30 seconds, then take out the battery and install it
normally;
5. Plug the power cord and Power on .

If still fails , please take all your ram sticks out from motherboard
, and power on.Will it give you long-long-long repeat beep warning?
If so , please clean your ram connectors with alcohol or with a clean
rubber then install your ram sticks back, you can first install 1
stick of ram into DIMMB1 slot .
If the system can boot with 1 ram stick , add another.

After above steps if the system does not boot and give no beeps,
please take out your AGP vga card , power on , will it give you 1
long and 2 or 3 short beeps followed ?If so ,please try to clean your
VGA card connector and install it back to motherboard , or you can try
to use another VGA card test again.
if still not , i think maybe your motherboard or your CPU is faulty ,
you need take a future test for each one and make sure on earth which
part cause system won't boot.
If it is due to motherboard damaged , you'd better Contact local asus
service centeror motherboard dealer for help .

if it is impossible , please contact with our call-center of usa
directly----(Monday-Friday 8:30 - 24:00 (EST))

Hotline: 1-502-995-0883
Fax:1-502-933-8713 to get more help,we will help you to resolve the
problem and let you satisfaction

Best regards ! >> END

I am really lost for what to do next. Any help or suggestions would
be appreciated. I won’t let this dream die!

Thanks in advance.

my guess is the memory, either isn't installed right, which I doubt, or it
is not up to snuff to run on that board.

Don't connect the psu fan sensor to the MBoard header.
See if it'll boot.

OK. You are doing the cardboard test, but are you using Vocal
POST ? Plug amplified computer speakers into the lime colored
Lineout connector on the back of the computer. When you power
up the system and momentarily short together the two power
switch pins on the PANEL header, what do you hear from the
speakers ?

To be methodical, you can actually start with just the motherboard
and the ATX power supply. You don't actually need any components
in the motherboard. The Vocal POST chip contains its own tiny
processor, and so it doesn't need anything else on the motherboard
in order to work.

With no components, the Vocal POST should complain about "No CPU
installed" or the like. (See the list of messages in the manual.)
After you add a CPU, on the next power up, it will complain about
"No RAM", if the CPU works just a bit. After adding RAM, on the
next powerup, it will complain about "No video card", meaning
the RAM must be working a bit, to pass the test.

If the thing you just added, kills the system, that will give
you an idea what is at fault.

Unless there is something shorting to the bottom of the board,
I would think either of your power supplies should have
enough power for a blank board Vocal POST test. A stuck reset
switch could stop it from POSTing, but at least the fans should
run when you push the power button.

Doing any other kinds of operations, like clearing the CMOS,
will only help if you can get the fans running when you
push the button. If the fans won't run, then the board isn't
getting any +12V, and without +12V, the CPU cannot run.

BTW: I hope in all your testing, you have been unplugging the
computer before adding or removing components. At the very
least, don't change any components when the green (+5VSB)
LED is glowing. +5VSB can damage stuff, and should be
disabled before changing anything. Unplugging is just a safe
habit to get into.

As "Kev S" has already said.

Place one single stick of RAM in slot B1 (third furthest from the cpu).

The board will then post - well it ought.

You can then flash the BIOS to one of the later BIOS's 1009/10 from Alt <F2>
during boot. It will then run in dual channel.

If you have any other problems, I suggest Google or back here.

Good Luck.

Thanks to all who replied! It was the Power switch jumper on the MB -
once I shorted it - it all powered up!

Now it is in the case and all is good.... Now onto loading windows.

Thanks Again...
