ASUS A7V8x-x USB2.0

Has anyone got any idea how to install the USB2.0 drivers in XP pro for this
board.

I've bought several of them and the USB driver stack for XP is not on the
motherboard cd-rom. USB2.0 drivers for all the Windows platforms prior to
XP home and Pro are on the motherboard cd-rom but, NOT the USB 2.0 stack for
the XP platforms. Just a stupid Notepad text file informing you that due to
a legal issue they can't supply them ! There's a stupid Word document file
on the cd-rom with some screen grabs of the Windows update / catalogue
procedure which advises you to install XP service pack 1 because Microsoft
supplies them with SP1 onwards.

Well, I've got SP1 and SP1a and I've fiddled around with this problem for
AGES until I just want grab hold of an Asus person and simply do something
horrible and nasty to him or her. Of course there is no Asus person ready
to hand at moments like those.

One of the first A7V8x-x boards I fought with on this issue ended up with
the correct USB2.0 drivers installed for the Via KT400 chipset, (found them
on the web somewhere), and now I've got three sets of USB 2.0 driver stacks
stored on my main machines 2nd data only hard-disk and I've lost track of
what's what. On this "first machine" machine, during one of the first XP
pro installations I did on it, (after installing SP1a), the "enhanced USB
2.0 controller" node was present somewhere near the middle of Device
managers' hardware tree. "upgrading or reinstalling" via the "properties"
route for this node got them partly installed and then hiccupped on not
being able to find usbehci.sys and the other three files in the driver
stack. I rummaged around and found them somewhere in a *.cab file, along
with an *.inf file, if I remember correctly but, even after unpacking them
and pointing the system to the damned files they still wouldn't go in ! The
"enhanced USB 2.0 controller" node move down to the bottom of Device
Managers' hardware tree along with all the USB 1.1 items, with the little
yellow circle and black exclamation point on it.

In the end I zero-filled the hard disk and installed XP pro from scratch,
and rummaged around the internet ito find xp-ViaKT400 USB2.0 drivers.

I used to reccommend Asus mainboards because they have always been simply
wonderful. I'm thinking of advising people, from now on, to buy MSI
motherboards simply because installing the USB2.0 drivers is as simple as
installing device drivers should be!

If anyone has a simple procedure for installing these damned things, and
knows how to locate them and install them in XP after installing SP1a, I'd
be thrilled if you could tell me, "blow by blow," how to locate and install
the b****y things!

Hi, recently I bought 2 A7V8x-x boards. On the first one XP home incl. sp1
was installed and on the second one XP home excl. sp1.
As expected, USB ports weren't detected properly on the second one. But that
was easily repaired by simply installing SP1.

Does the device manager show yellow question marks?
Or do you have a proper list of items under USB controllers (eg. with Via
Rev5 universal host
controller)?
The 2nd case means that USB2.0 drivers are up and running. If both are not
the case I would suggest checking the obvious first: check in the Bios
whether you have the USB controller enabled.

To find out whether you have the proper USB2 drivers check the following:
Version / File name
5.1.2600.1106 / Usbport.sys
5.1.2600.1106 / Usbhub.sys
5.1.2600.1106 / Hccoin.dll
5.1.2600.1106 / Usbehci.sys

From VIA Technology:

"Due to licensing agreements, USB 2.0 drivers are not available for
download [from VIA]. USB 2.0 drivers are supplied on CD with new
mainboards or new cards. If you have misplaced the driver CD or have
questions about the USB 2.0 driver, please contact your motherboard
manufacturer, the manufacturer of the USB 2.0 PCI card, or Microsoft."

From Asus:

"Please go to 'Windows Update' (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) to
install Microsoft USB 2.0 Host Controller Driver or Windows XP Service
Pack 1. "

So, it seems that neither VIA nor Asus supply the Windows XP drivers.
This leaves contacting Microsoft...

Good luck!

I just ordered a A7V8X-X, so it looks like I'll need to know where to
get this. Is it not OK to use the Win2k driver? ASUS has this Win98SE
/ WinME / WinNT / Win2K driver:

FileName usb2v252.zip Version 2.52 Date 2003/06/27
Description VIA USB 2.0 Host Controller Drivers V2.52
File Size 1.89 (MBytes)

I''ll try and find the link and post it here, if I can find it, to a web
site that explains that the "driver stack" (four files) are specific to each
Windows platform. The drivers USB2.0 drivers for W2k are different than the
set for XP.
