ASUS A7V and USB problems with ADSL

H

Hm

I'd be grateful for any advice.

I have an Alcatel ADSL modem working perfectly on one of my PCs. I now
want to install the modelm on a 2nd PC which has an ASUS A7V with VIA
VT8363 (VIA Apollo KT133) chipset.

The only other USB device I use on this PC (an Epson scanner) works
perfectly but does not take its power from the USB connection.

I am able to establish an ADSL connection, but as soon as I try to
download anything (i.e. as soon as I open Internet Explorer) the
modem crashes immediately and appears to disable the USB port. I have
purchased a self powered USB hub in the hope it would cure the problem
and this appears to make a slight difference. Now, when I connect my
session works for a little longer and downloads part of the first Web
page before powering down.

I am using Windows 98SE.

Any help would be appreciated.

The best way to access Cable and DSL ISP is via a Cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys
BEFSR41 and not use USB, use Ethernet.

Hi, USB was always buggy on my old AV7 KT133 chipset, others were reported
same problems specially trying keep modems connected, my satellite modem
would not stay connected, I went Ethernet and no more problems.
Its a chipset problem Asus or VIA never totally resolved.

In 1999 MS did put out a USB update for USB problems using VIA chipsets.

Hello there!

I happen to have the same board, ASUS A7V rev 1.02 and the same modem.
Deadly combination! It is an old and known problem but neither alcatel or
asus did anything to correct it. I spent months trying to solve it.

The problem starts from four settings in the bios and because their names
are irrelevant to what one would expect it is very hard to blame them.

Go to advanced->chip configuration and you will find four items the one
under the other, the first and most importand is PCI master read caching.
Disable that and 80% your problem will go away instantly. If not, also
disable PCI to DRAM prefetch, and if still nothing happens disable all four
of them (byte merge & delayed transanction).

I know it sounds stupid but it is these settings. Try for yourself and let
me know what happens.

You better get the latest BIOS as well, it should help.

Hi there.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I never did resolve the problems with
this combination of hardware and Windows 98. Over and above the USB
problem which seems to be due to the combination of Win 98SE, Via and
AMD, I had another problem that really stumped me. Whenever I loaded
Creative Blaster Live Platinum 5.1 drivers, I lost my CD-ROM and DVD
drives. Whenever I un-installed they re-appeared. This was happening
with every combination of drivers I used.

I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to Windows XP, downloaded the
latest drivers and everything worked perfectly 1st time. I now have
absolutely no remaining problems with either the soundcard or my USB
modem.

Thanks everyone.
