Assigning Tasks - HELP!!!

M

Michael J. Gould

I am running Outlook 2002 on my computer and my assistant is running same on
hers. Our two computers are networked on a peer-to-peer ethernet LAN but
each has its own software on its own hard drive.

When I create a task and try to assign it to my assistant, an e-mail
addressing menu pops up and asks, in effect, for her e-mail address. I can
use the menu to call up my Outlook Express address book (and maybe other
address books too, maybe an Outlook address book if there is such a thing)
but the only e-mail address there is her home computer and I don't want to
send the task to her house.

I gues what I'm really asking is can Outlook give another LAN computer an
address such that a task assigned from my Outlook will be sent via LAN to my
assistant's computer?

Thanks in advance to any and all who might try to tackle this question.

Why are you using the Outlook Express contact list? Do you have the Outlook
Address Book service installed? Is your Outlook Contacts folder marked to
be used as an address book? Where do you have your assistant's address
filed?

Hi, and thanks for replying.

Outlook Express seems to be my default address book. When I tried to assign
the task I took a look at the upper right end of the menu bar and saw a box
in which I could select the address sources for assignments; the default
choice was CONTACTS and the arrow gave me a second choice, Outlook Address
Book but when I tried to select that, I got a message saying I couldn't
because it did not have any addresses in it at all.

So I exited that program and tried to make a new entry in the Outlook
address book. I was told by the program that I can't add entries to this.

Fine, so I went back to contacts, and tried to enter as the assistant's
e-mail address, what was essentially a path from my hard drive to hers (to
her Desktop.) I was warned that this path would not be accepted by Outlook
as an e-mail address. Sure enough when I made up a new task and tried to
assign it, the box asked me for addresses to which it could be assigned, but
the assistant's name did not show up as one of my choices. If I changed the
path to a conventional e-mail address (like (e-mail address removed)) then Outlook
recognized her as a legitimate address to which the task could be assigned.

I think the problem is an addressing problem. Apparently, Outlook will not
recognize anything other than a conventional e-mail address (x@y) as an
address for assigning Tasks. This would seem to indicate that every Task
could only be assigned (at least, through use of the Assign command) by
e-mailing and not through a LAN. Theoretically, there would be nothing to
prevent my saving the Task through the LAN to an address on her hard drive,
but of course this would not be recognized by Outlook as an assigned Task
and it's "ownership" would remain mine.
