assigning a value

I have a column that has X's in it to designate specific data.
At the end of the column I would like to sum the number
of Xs which would mean that I would need to assign a value
of 1 to X. I have set up in the VB editor code that should work
but is not. So, starting from fresh, I am looking for suggestions.
