Assigning a value to text then getting total.

Hi,

I have a spreadsheet which contains a number of letters(h, d, t, e). Each
of these letters actually represent different numbers. Is there a way I can
get excel to assign a value to each of these so I can calculate the total
amounts?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks,

Hi

One way would be
=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A100={"h","d","t","e"})*{1,2,3,4})
Change range to suit and substitute your values for h,d,t,e in the
array{1,2,3,4}
