In system portion of the event log I see an error during boot up. The
ASPI32 service failed to start because the file could not be found.
File name not given.

Looked in the various run and runonce keys in the registry, in the
start menu, and in services but cannot find anything closely
resembling an ASPI file.

I'm at a loss as to how the service is attempting to be initiated.

Any ideas?

Since it's not starting anyway, use Administrative Tools>>
Services to permanently set it to Disabled.

That should stop the bitchin'

Could be a leftover either from cd burning software, old
scanner driver or DeCSS DVD-rip software.

I would if I could only determine which task. I've checked
www.blackviper.com site but no mention of ASPI.

It's not a *task*, it's a *service*.

Follow my suggestion and DISABLE it if it appears
in devmgmt.msc>>Services.

Make a restore point first just in case.

If it's not there, just ignore it and get on with life.

V Green, thanks for taking the time to respond to my question. I
appreciate the effort.

But, I do not appreciate your cavalier attitude of "ignore it and get
on with your life." My life is quite full, thank you, but I do not
make it a habit of ignornig details. Had you read my initial inquiry
you would have seen I had checked services but could not find it.

This is not an earthshaking problem. My system runs fine. This, as
all problems, is an opportunity to learn. I've exhausted my
abilities and was seeking suggestions on how to proceed.

I apologize for calling a "service" a "task." Some of us who cut our
eye teeth with Operating Systems beginning in the 60's sometime have
difficulties with today's vocabulary. A folder is about 10x12 inches,
usually yellow and often contains paper documents. On the other hand,
a data set or partioned data set contains data or program files.

Anyway. Thanks again.

OK, since you're REALLY serious about this....

I missed the part where you stated that you searched
in services-I thought you were manually looking for
it in Service related keys in the Registry.

You say you've searched the Registry for it...

Does that mean you've used the Find function
in REGEDIT? Did you use it on parts of
the string (e.g. ASPI without the 32)? How
about upper then lower case? REGEDIT is
a pretty literal searcher...and don't forget to
toggle all the options to look in keys, values,
etc. I've had stuff buried in the Registry that took
just the right combination of case sensitivity and
"Keys Values Data" on or off AND "match whole
string only" on or off...it's not quite as straightforward
as it would seem.

As far as ignoring stuff in Event Viewer-I don't like
to see weird and/or unexplained stuff there either. I just
learned long ago that EV/System is a whiny little bastard,
often complaining about conditions that I could verify independently
with other means did not exist. Unless there's a serious error
there that makes sense to me, I just spend a minimal amount
of time attempting to correct most of the "nonsense" entries.

Case in point-I installed Visual Studio Prof. on a W2K machine, and
it insisted on installing IE 6.0. IE 6.0 caused all kinds of trouble
with a heretofor perfectly working machine, so I uninstalled the lot.
Now, EV gets a dozen or so PerfCtr errors related to the VS IDE
whenever I start. I've researched the steps necessary to clear up these
errors, and decided that's it's actually easier to wipe the HD and reinstall
W2K than follow the convoluted procedures to clear them. But, since
the relevant docs that told of how to do this also indicated that they're
harmless, I took the low road and now just ignore them. If I ever have
any spare time ;-) I just might try to fix them. It's just not a
priority.

I got work to do.

Anyway, as already mentioned, ASPI gets loaded by a fair amt.
of applications that you think would have no use for it...list some
of the stuff you're running, esp. things related to optical drives
and scanners. Also try to think of anything you've had installed
that you have since uninstalled...methinks your symptoms sound
much like a crappy uninstall routine that didn't clean up after itself
(which is almost all of them).

I've searched the Registry and found aspi32:

HKLM\system\controlset001\enum\root\legacy_aspi32\0000
2 keys of interest perhaps:
DeviceDesc Reg_sz ASPI32
Service Reg_sz ASPI32

HKLM\system\controlset001\services\aspi32\enum
Key of interest perhaps:
0 Reg_sz Root\legacy_aspi\0000

Identical entries in HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet

HKLM\system\ControlSet002 has the 1st entry with DeviceDesc and
Service keys but does not have the controlset002\services entry.

I use XP home with SP2. USB connected Canon Multipass F80
multfunction printer (print, copy, scan, fax). USB connected HP
DVD300e DVD burner. USB connected Western Digital external HDD.

Dell preconfigured system. I removed the provided DVD and CD burner
software (Showbiz, Recordnow) and installed Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator
V6. Removed the provided digital camera images processing application
and installed USB connected HP812 digital camera and software.

This is not an urgent problem. If and when you get time.

Thanks.
