ASP.NET Machine Account

Hi,

My wife's PC is running XP Home Edition. It was having perfromance problems
so I chose to accept the "You have new updates for your computer" pop-up that
is always presents itself. I beleive I have installed Service Pack 1.1 and 2
but cant be sure. The PC is more than 2 years old and we have not accepted
updates before so there was probbaly quite a lot of update sin there.

After the reboot:

1. I see a new ASP.Net Machine Account user which was not there before.

2. My wife's user name now prompts for a password even though we never set
one up. We have never used a password before. If hit enter with a blank
password I get this message:

"The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively".

And we're stuck. We can't login. If I login in safe mode I have the same
issue with the administrator password, which was also blank. What can I do?
The PC is unusable right now. And I can't even log a call with Microsoft now
as they want my PID which I believe I can only get to if I can get into the
start menu.

Thanks.

Hello Patti,

Thanks for the quick reply. I looked at your links. The ASP.NET article
might help me later but first I need to be able to get in. The second artilce
looked very promising on this front but I was not able to locate the "Random
password..." line in the setupact.log. Do you have any more suggestions for
me?

Thanks,

Scott.

You're welcome for the quick reply.......sorry I wasn't as quick with this
reply, but we found ourselves suddenly very short-handed at work so I've
been working overtime shifts in addition to my regular shifts all this week.

I kinda thought the second article might not work out, as it relates to
performing an upgrade or in-place upgrade (over-the-top reinstall) but then
nothing ventured nothing gained.

I did a Google search to see if there was mention of any other possible
solutions. The most common recommendation was to perform a reinstall
(in-place upgrade) of Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us

Another user stated that performing only Part One of "How to recover from a
corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting" solved the
problem for him:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545
Please note the Warning in the SUMMARY section.
Also, if you opt to perform only Part One, any applications, patches,
updated drivers, etc., that you had installed after the initial installation
of XP would have to be reinstalled.

Regards,
