ASP.Net 2.0?

I've been developing apps in ASP.Net for a few years but have been
working in linus/java world recently. I curious about ASP.Net 2.0 but
haven't upgraded my VS environment in a long time... or ever.

I'm curious what exactly ASP.Net 2.0 is. I'd like to use the new
MasterPages and ADO.Net uimprovements without having to purchase an
upgrade to my Visual Studio (which is probably overdue) Can I develop
apps in Visual Studio '03 or earlier for ASP.Net 2.0? . Also, can I
run ASP.Net 1 and 2.0 apps on the same app server?
