ASP Issues in IE and Netscape 7.1

Dave Levy

A particular website http://www.swansonvitamins.com/ that I
have browsed fine in the past has .ASP functionality. When
I try to load this URL I now get the following error message:

Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a01f4'

Variable is undefined: 'vstrLinkshareId'

/shophome.asp, line 117

This originally was happening in my Windows ME environment
just with Netscape 7.1 and not with Internet Explorer 5.5 -
but then started happening there as well. I also just
upgraded to Internet Explorer 6.0 and the problem persists
there also. I am not having trouble with nearly all other
websites on either browser.

Is the problem on my end or theirs? What can I/they do to
fix this??

I also just tried to register at:
http://www.nvidia.com/content/nvregister/frmLoginRegister.asp
and got another ASP-related error message, as follows:

Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 800401f3'

Server.CreateObject Failed

/content/nvregister/prcLogin.asp, line 21

Invalid ProgID. For additional information specific to this
message please visit the Microsoft Online Support site
located at: http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

This happens just with Netscape 7.1, but I get a different
error in IE 6.0, as follows:

The Page cannot be Displayed...
HTTP 500 - Internal server error
Internet Explorer

A server issue (or my client)??

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Dave Levy

Both of the problems you mention are on "their" end, and all you can do
about it is notify the site owners that you're seeing the errors. Those
errors are happening on the server, and are independent of your browser,
though IE is displaying the "friendly" version of the error. If you're
interested in seeing more detail in IE, you can turn the friendly error
messages off by going to Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced and
unchecking "Show friendly HTTP error messages".

Hope this helps,

Greetings, Chris! (and other MS Newsgroup folks)

Thanks for responding to my post. I also "officially"
contacted MS Tech Support and have since replied. Here's
the dialog:

-----------------

Greetings, Alan!

Thanks for fielding my issues re: the ASP problems I've
encountered recently. At first, I wasn't sure if the
problem could have been on my end rather than being the
fault of buggy server includes. I probably should have
enlisted a friend or relative to try their system on these
same URLs. Can you browse to:
http://www.swansonvitamins.com/ without getting the ASP
runtime error (undefined variable) that I had mentioned?

I mentioned the problem to Swanson Customer Service, who
said they'd talk to their webmaster about it. I called
them about this more than a week ago, and now I still can't
reach their website with either browser, even to get their
phone number again! I'm anxious to place a web order
before their prices go up as of 9/15.

I'll let you know what NVIDIA's webmaster has to say about
the ASP server object error I had also mentioned. It turns
out that this is due to the use of my "compound" email
alias <[email protected]> in their registration
form rather than my "actual" ISP-based address (which I'm
replying from now) that this alias currently maps to.
Their ASP script is rejecting this email address format and
somehow issuing a "creation failure" server object error
rather than flagging "incorrect form contents" with a
better error handling routine and posting a more "useful"
error page. Monster.com also rejected my "alumni
email-for-life" address, stating that "it must be of the
form <[email protected]>" - I haven't addressed this with
them yet. I did finally manage to register with NVIDIA at
my "short" (and more temporary!) email address.

Now that web servers are getting "smarter" there seems to
be more room for generating confusing errors such as the
ones I've brought up!

Thanks again for your prompt assistance!

Sincerely,

Dave Levy ;^}
