ASCII set please help

A user from our office, had on his Windows XP the square root sign when he
used, alt-251, now on his new comp with XP he gets another character. How can
i get this back?

That depends. If you're talking about the command prompt, just enter
'CHCP 437' and he/she's all set.

Things are different when using a Windows application. Note that not all
fonts have that character. If he/she's using the same application and
font, the user or the administrator has changed the codepage. Since there
are administrative privileges required as well as the WinXP CD, the Admin
did a bad job in either case. Reset the codepage to 'English (USA)' for
instance: "Working with Code Pages in Windows"

Anyway, the user might be better off when using the Character Map instead:
Start > Run: charmap.exe
