.asc file type in Word 2007

How can I use Word 2007 to save files in the MS-Dos text with layout (.asc)
format?.

File - Save As, and drop down the Save as type: list. Here, MS-DOS text with
layout (.asc) is listed among the types. If you don't see it, try here:

This does not work for large file sizes. Are there suggestions for larger
files?

I've never had any such problem, but if you do, the workaround is fairly
obvious: Split the large document into two or more smaller pieces, save each
one as text, and then combine the text files in a text editor such as
Notepad.
