As good as a boot time scan?

Would creating an image of the OS, mounting it as a removable drive,
scan it with an anti-virus and malware scanners, be better than a
boot-time scan?

What are you trying to do, or avoid doing?

An OS image could be just a huge data file and may be compressed. I
believe mounting it as if it were a drive requires that the imaging
program's decompression and perhaps even some pseudo file system be
running in addition to what the OS environment is doing.

The imaging program may allow you to browse the data "as if" it were a
mounted drive with a file system, but I'm not sure it allows you to
browse anything outside of the conventional data areas - that is files only.
