Article 817768 - Windows Explorer Stops Responding When It Tries to Sort More Than 1 Million Objects

I got the fix for this and applied it however in the article it says the following

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explore

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD
Type SortMaxItemCount, and then press ENTER.
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
Type Maximum_#, and then click OK

I thought a DWord value was a numerical value up to 4 characters? I've entered the value (Maximum_#) as stated but after entering it the new attribute still says 0. I ask this because my Windows Explorer still hangs although it is a little better

note this line in the article. After you have installed the hotfix, you must
modify the registry to set a value for the maximum number of files to be
sorted. I'd assume the # is the number you choose. Give that a try.

I thought of that but then I thought MS wouldn't put a finite number on that would they? So I didn't think that was what they meant but I'll give it a shot and see. Thanks

I certainly hope they fix this 1 million object problem in Win2003 as hard drives get bigger I can easily see arrays with more than 1 million files. I already have several servers with more than 2 million but the files aren't all on the same array. This particular server has an application that generates a bunch of 12 - 15kb pdf and rtf files.

As the article states:

Note Maximum_# is the value for the maximum number of items that Windows
Explorer sorts in any one folder.

So enter a number.

Hi,

You should set the value of the SortMaxItemCount to 9,999,999. Please
select the Decimal when input the 9,999,999.

We still need to modify the registry after installed the hotfix or SP4.

If this still does not work, let's test whether the issue still happens in
the Safe Mode.

I want to know if it's possible to create more folders and move these files
to different folder. Even the system does not crash or hang, the
performance still will be poor.

Thanks for using Microsoft News Group!
