Arrow keys always selecting text

When editing text connected to a remote computer from Win XP the arrow keys
are always selecting text. It is like the shift key is pressed at the same
time (which it is not). The End and Home key also selects the entire line
rather then just jumping the cursor. This seems to happen regardless of the
text editing program used.

Using the host machine directly or directly connecting to the remote machine
does not exhibit this behavior. I've also now seen this behvaior or two
different win xp boxes (my home and work machines).

Any thoughts?

Found some more information. The behavior appears tied to the NumLock key.
With Num Lock on every application acts like the Shift is pressed along with
whatever other key I have pressed. So arrow keys always select text, the
delete key permantly deletes messages in Outlook, etc. With NumLock off the
arrows keys move the cursor like normal but I can't them to select text even
with the Shift key down.

Any one have a better solution than using num lock as my shift key.

Add me to this list. I have the exact same problem
connecting to work from one machine. My other home PC is
working fine.

The problem started sometime after 9/11 and I first
noticed on 9/18. (I work at home on Thursdays and
connect using remote desktop).

I believe it must be tied to a Windows update but I have
loaded quite a few in the past two weeks.

It is really driving me crazy.

I was able to eliminate the problem using the System
Restore utility and rolling back a point before I had the
problem.

I will now try to apply the Windows updates one at a time
and see if I can find which one caused the problem.

At least it is working normally now. Maybe I will even
get some work done today.
