Ark Linux 1.0 Alpha 11.1 - A desktop Linux distribution.

About:
Ark Linux is a desktop linux distribution that is aimed primarily at new
Linux users. It is intended to be extremely easy to use while still being
technically sound.

Changes:
Many bugs have been fixed. GTK apps share QT widgets. Kynaptic is now used
instead of synaptic as the front end for apt-rpm. KDE has been updated to
3.2.1. WINE is configured to work out of the box. dosemu is included.
There is support for many more languages, better support for NVIDIA-based
cards, and preliminary support for Linux 2.6. This release is much easier
to use.

Release focus: Major feature enhancements
License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

The website does not mention whetheror not this can be installed on a
computer with any version of Windows; some can, but most can't. I have
an 80Gb NTFS hard drive, only the 80G partition. Will this be friend or
foe?

Obviously not anywhere near beginner-friendly or windows-friendly.

But it sounds like an interesting linux version for the experienced
person, who has a spare computer to install it on.

Or somebody who knows how to disconnect one hard disk and connect
another while trying out new linux versions, to protect the windows hard
disk from any interference.

Thanks, Mike. I think I will back off. Does anyone know whatever
became of WinLinu? Is it still freeware?

I tried to use Winlinux for some time on my old computer.
It is available for download at http://www.winlinux.net/

You have to give an email address before download (does not have to be
your real address).

The download server was a bit strange, it started fast and slowed down
more and more until it was really slow.
I used a downloader with many threads to get it home.
That was the only time I have ever used more than 10 threads in a
downloader program.

The install is pretty straightforward, you need at least 3 GB free space
to unpack it, change to a drive where you have that space if needed.

I never got the visual things to work because I had a very incompatible
graphics card.

It was nice, though, to be able to look at the files from windows,
change a file with my text editor metapad, and reboot into winlinux and
see if it worked better.
I learned a lot from trying to get things to work that way.

It was very civilized towards my windows installation, no problem.
It uses the same file system as windows, vfat32.

Look at the system rquirements at http://www.winlinux.net/features/
before you download it.

I can recommend winlinux if you want to learn more about linux and still
use your windows programs to work with it, because it installs as a
folder named Linux on a hard disk partition you choose, where you have 3
GB free to unpac in.
The final installed linux takes less than that though, it just needs a
lot of space to unpac and install itself.

Thank you very much, Roger. I will look at the compatability link you
offered, then download and try if it will work with XP.

I looked at it and I can tell you right away it will not work with XP.
Only win95-98-ME.

It also needs vfat32, and I think you have ntfs in XP.

Sorry.

If you can get hold of another hard disk, they are pretty cheap now,
especially used ones, you can experiment a lot more without risking your
normal hard disk. Just leave that one unconnected while you experiment
with other operating systems on another hard disk.
